LAN-HITZ

The LanHitz programme is an initiative designed to increase the use and presence of the Basque language in the workplace as well.

It is an initiative promoted by the Sub-Department for Language Policy with the collaboration of the Provincial Councils, the EUDEL association of Basque Town Councils, and the Departments of Industry and Employment of the Government of the Basque Autonomous Community. Furthermore, it has the guarantee and support of employers’ organisations and majority trade unions.

In recent years citizens as well as the public authorities have been joining forces with the aim of achieving an increasingly bilingual society. In this work the Government of the Basque Autonomous Community launched a series of initiatives during the 1990s to promote the use of Basque in the workplace. At that time it was a pilot programme targeting large companies in favourable conditions, now it is a solid programme targeting the remaining enterprises.

Active policies and the participation of entrepreneurs, workers and trade unions can turn Basque into a reality in the workplace by ensuring its use, and thus achieving a society that is more integrated and cohesive.
